Ceiling the Deal

Admiral's Cove Residence - Tongue & Groove Ceiling

Fall and Winter bring cooler weather to South Florida. This is our escape from the hot and humid weather. A great time to be in the mild and temperate outdoors with temperatures averaging in the high to mid seventies with out the muggy humidity. A perfect time to watch the game on the flat screen out on the patio, enjoy a nice dinner on the loggia or barbeque in the outdoor kitchen.

Tongue and Groove CeilingThese areas once again become a major source of entertainment. It's as if another part of the home has been expanded to bring the indoors, outside. Look up on many of these areas and you see stucco. Our last client didn't want to look at stucco. The husband and wife thought it really didn't have that finished look. It felt more like and old outdoor patio. They had seen many beautiful custom built homes with wood ceilings, so they inquired about adding wood to their loggia ceiling.

Matot Mouldings came out and showed them that there are many different ways to finish off an outdoor ceiling. Most custom home builders will use tongue and groove cypress wood to cover the "lids". The most popular woods are Pecky Cypress, Cypress and Cedar. These species of wood do well in the Florida climate with their ability to adapt from hot and humid temperatures to cool and dryness. They also come in different grades from the few small knots of "Select" to a slightly more knotted "#2" grade. Pecky Cypress is in a class of its own, filled with holes and knots. Giving it a very rich and lively texture.
